On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the Pacific Fleet's base in Pearl Harbor, USA. In response to Japan's 1941 invasion of French Indochina, the United States imposed a freeze on all Japanese assets there, preventing Japan from acquiring oil. Japan intended to grab the necessary oil by force after losing 94 per cent of its oil supply and refusing to accede to American demands. To temper that response, Japan decided to attack Pearl Harbour, hoping the U.S. would engage in peace talks.
