April 24, 2006, was the day King was forced to concede to the demands of SPA. King Gyanendra established the absolute monarchy in Nepal in 2005 by abolishing the democratically elected government, dissolving the Parliament and seizing all the powers in his own hands, i.e., the King. The SPA stands for the Seven Party Alliance, an alliance formed by the Nepalese people to fight against the monarchy and restore democracy in the country. They demanded the setting up of a constituent assembly, restoration of the Parliament and an all-party government which the King accepted in 2006.
