One of the biggest revolutionary social reforms of the Jacobin regime was the abolition of slavery in the French colonies. The exploitation of slave labourers made it possible to fulfil the expanding demands for sugar, coffee, and indigo in European markets. Cities like Bordeaux and Nantes, which were port cities, prospered economically due to the flourishing slave trade. In the seventeenth century, between Europe, Africa, and America, a triangular slave trade had begun. The abolition of slavery in French colonies was finally brought in 1848.
