In 1850s, i.e before industrialiasation , there were more white winged moths on trees than dark winged moths. but after industrialisation, i.e 1920 there were more dark winged or melanised moths, as smoke and soot settled down on bark of the trees , dark winged moths could not be spotted by birds and they survived and flourished. this is called industrial melanism.
