Over 22 million Africans still rely on some form of pastoral activity for their livelihood.
Bedouins, Berbers, Maasai, Somalis, Borans, and Turkana are among them. The lives of African pastoralists, like those of Indian pastoralists, have changed considerably during the colonial and post-colonial centuries. The majority of them today live in semi-arid grasslands or deserts, where rainfed agriculture is difficult to practice. The Maasai cattle herders are mostly found in East Africa, with 300,000 in southern Kenya and 150,000 in Tanzania. Their way of life has been altered by rules, laws, and regulations. There are many problems which they have faced, the most prominent one being the continuous loss of their grazing grounds.
