Ovulation is the release of secondary oocyte from Graafian follicle. It is triggered by LH surge and typically occurs around the midpoint of the menstrual cycle, which is about 14 days after the start of the last menstrual period in a woman with a 28-day cycle. The secondary oocyte released during ovulation is arrested at metaphase II and completes second meiotic division after the penetration of the sperm into it during fertilisation.
