Soon after the East India Company gained governmental clout, it could claim a trading monopoly. It created a management and control system that would reduce competition, regulate costs, and guarantee consistent supplies of cotton and silk products. The company tried to control the weaver more directly by eliminating the current merchants and brokers involved in the textile trade. It designated the gomastha, a hired servant, to oversee weavers, gather materials, and assess the fabric's quality. The East India Company forbade Company weavers from doing business with other purchasers. Conflicts between weavers and gomasthas were reported in several weaving villages. In the past, supply merchants frequently resided in the weaving villages and had strong relationships with the weavers, tending to their needs and supporting them during difficult times. The new gomasthas were strangers with no enduring social ties to the village.
