Pamlou is a term used for jhumming cultivation in Manipur. Jhumming cultivation is commonly used for slash and burn or shifting agriculture in the North-Eastern states of India. It involves the burning of forests and clearing them for crop cultivation. The felled vegetation or the slash is left to dry before the rainy season. Then the dried vegetation is burnt, providing a nutrient-rich layer of ashes that acts as natural manure for the soil and eliminates the weeds and pests. But due to the weed and pest invasion and nutrient depletion, the fertility of the plot diminishes after three to five years. Hence the farmer leaves the plot idle and shifts to a new land.
