The penumbra is a partial part of a shadow that occurs when an object partly covers a light source. For example, when the moon obscures part of the Sun's disk, the other two areas are the umbra and the antumbra. Umbra is the shadow's dark center portion. Meanwhile, Antumbra is the lighter part of the shadow that begins where the umbra tapers to a point.
