The Public Distribution System ( PDS ) is a part of the Minimum Needs Programme, which the government started in the Fifth Five-year Plan. The main objective of such programs is to provide basic amenities to the poor section of society. India is among the few countries that realise that the living standard of a country's population can be improved by public expenditure on social consumption needs. Under PDS, ration shops are arranged by the government in various residential areas. These shops give rations at a very reasonable cost to provide nutritional merits to the poor section of society. Such programs improve the quality of life and people's health.
