Detailed Solution

Peasants in Awadh demanded the abolishment of begar during the Non-Cooperation Movement. Begar was the unpaid labour that villagers were compelled to do. The movement in Awadh was directed against talukdars and landlords who sought exorbitantly high rent and a variety of additional cesses from peasants. Peasants had no security of tenure because they were frequently evicted, preventing them from acquiring ownership rights to the rented land. The peasant movement targeted the oppressive landowners through social boycotts, revenue reduction demands, and begar abolition demands. Panchayats organised nai-dhobi bandhs in various locations to deny landlords access to barbers and washermen.
