People gathered in Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919. They gathered to mark the beginning of the Baisakhi festival. On Baisakhi day, April 13 1919, nearly a thousand Sikhs gathered in Amritsar's Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate their festival.
General Reginald Dyer arrived with his troops. General Dyer closed off all exits and opened fire on the crowd, killing hundreds of people. People were outraged after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and went on strike, clashed with police, and attacked government buildings. Because the movement was devolving into a violent war, Mahatma Gandhi was forced to call it to a halt. The Jallianwalla Bagh massacre killed 379 people and injured over 1000 others.
