People have lived along the banks of the river for several thousand years.
Along the banks of this river, there have been people living for several thousand years. Early settlers included some skilled hunters or independent farmers. They gathered roots, fruits, and other forest products for their food because they knew the huge range of plants in the nearby forests. They also went animal hunting. Some of the first cities thrived around the banks of the Indus River and its tributaries about 4700 years ago. Cities began to grow along the banks of the Ganga and its tributaries about 2500 years ago. The region along these rivers south of the Ganga was known as Magadha. Its rulers established a vast domain and possessed considerable authority.
