People were divided into groups called Jatis, and their ranks were based on their backgrounds and occupations as the society became differentiated.
The power, influence, and resources that members of the jati controlled determined the ranks, which were not fixed in place. Different regions may have different jati statuses. To control the conduct of their members, the Jatis created their laws and regulations. An assembly of elders known as the jati panchayat in various regions was responsible for enforcing these laws.
