Detailed Solution

Periyar was a critic of Hindu scriptures. E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker, also known as Periyar, joined the Congress and subsequently left it after learning that lower castes were forced to sit aside from upper castes. Periyar founded the Self-Respect Movement, claiming that untouchables were best suited to maintain the original Tamil and Dravidian culture, which had been suppressed by the Brahmans. Periyar was a critic of Hindu scriptures, particularly the Bhagavad Gita and the Ramayana, as well as the codes of the ancient lawgiver Manu. He believed that the consumption of these books established men's supremacy over women and Brahman dominance over lesser castes.
