Nana Saheb was the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao. Peshwa is a title given to the Prime Minister in the Maratha Empire, who would look after military affairs. After Peshwa Baji Rao passed away, his Nana Saheb had to ask the British rulers to give him a pension. However, his demands were rejected by the British. As a result, he got angry at them. During the 1857 revolt, he expelled the British garrison from Kanpur and proclaimed himself the Peshwa. He claimed he was a governor under the authority of Bahadur Shah Zafar and waged war against the Englishmen.
