Detailed Solution

Peter Norman, Carlos Williams and Tommie Smith made a political statement on the Civil Rights Movement in the USA at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
The Civil Rights Movement was nonviolent in the United States against legalised racism. Martin Luther King Jr. led the campaign, and Williams and Carlos were able to bring international attention to the African American struggles and place the matter at the heart of human rights discussion. Stating politics at a sports event received mixed reviews. However, the problem of African American poverty at the hands of racial discrimination has become a matter of international concern. The three athletes risked their careers as athletes in this action. Carlos and Williams had to face opposition in their own country. Norman was rejected from the Australian team.
