Detailed Solution

When phenol is heated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) in the presence of alcoholic KOH, it gives salicylic acid.

This reaction is known as the Reimer–Tiemann reaction.

  • Reaction:

C6H5OH+CCl4+3KOH    Δ    oHOC6H4COOH  (Salicylic  acid)C_6H_5OH + CCl_4 + 3KOH \;\;\xrightarrow{\Delta}\;\; o-HO–C_6H_4–COOH \; (Salicylic\; acid)

In this reaction, the –CHO or –COOH group is introduced at the ortho position of phenol due to the activating effect of the –OH group.

Final Answer: The reaction is called the Reimer–Tiemann reaction.
