Phule dedicated his book Gulamgiri to the American movement to free slaves
Phule published a book in 1873 called Gulamgiri, which is Hindi for slavery. The American Civil War had been fought around ten years prior, which resulted in the abolition of slavery in America. Phule made a connection between the plight of the "lower" castes in India and that of the black slaves in America by dedicating his book to all the Americans who had battled for the freedom of slaves. Phule argued against other forms of inequality in addition to the caste system. He cared deeply about the suffering of "higher" caste women, the suffering of labourers, and the dehumanisation of the "low" castes.
