PMRY was started in 1993.
The Central Government of India started it. The main aim of PMRY is to create self-employment opportunities for educated unemployed youth in rural areas and small towns. This has helped many unemployed people set up their businesses and promoted non-farming activities in the cities. This has also created jobs for unskilled people. The scheme offers loans to unemployed youth and women. Everyone can apply for this scheme, but they must be permanent residents of the country, and the age limit is 18 to 35 years. It has been extended to 40 years for SC/ST, ex-servicemen, women, and the physically disabled.
