Lord Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India, imposed the paramountcy policy. The company became the supreme law under this policy. The primary power helped protect the company's area of interest, which justified the annexation of any Indian kingdom or state. This policy gave power to the East India Company and was considered more significant than the Indian states. Thus The company's policy of annexing or threatening to annex any kingdom in India was justified by this policy of paramountcy.
