Detailed Solution

Powerful & wealthy Samantas declared themselves to be maha-semantics and Mahamandleshwar. They were frequently acknowledged as the Samanthas, or servants, of the existing kings. They were expected to support them militarily, attend their courts, and bring gifts for their kings or other overlords. The Samantas proclaimed themselves maha-samanta, maha-mandaleshvara (the great lord of a "circle" or region), and so on as they grew in strength and wealth. They occasionally proclaimed their independence from their masters. The Rashtrakutas in the Deccan were one such group. They were initially under the control of the Chalukyas of Karnataka.
