The Prarthana Samaj was founded in Bombay in 1867 to eradicate caste prejudice, outlaw child marriage, promote women's education, and lift the prohibition on widow remarriage. The Samaj used Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian scriptures in religious gatherings. The Prarthana Samaj also upheld the Bhakti tradition, which asserted that all castes were spiritually equal. Moreover, the movement resembled Brahmo Samaj greatly.
