Pre-unification, Sardinia-Piedmont was the only Italian state to be ruled by an Italian Princely House. As Italy was politically fragmented, different regions of Italy had different local dialects. The Italian language was not a common language for all fragmented regions of Italy except Sardinia-piedmont because the Italian princely house ruled Sardinia-Piedmont.
