Detailed Solution

  • The reaction in which the cations (positively charged ions) from one of the reactants combine with the anions (negatively charged ions) from the other reactant to form an insoluble ionic compound is known as a precipitation reaction.
  • For example, When aqueous solutions of potassium iodide and lead(II) nitrate are mixed, the following reaction occurs:2KI + Pb(NO3)2 2KNO3 + PbI2(precipitate)
  • Here, potassium ions combine with nitrate ions to form potassium nitrate and lead ions combine with iodide ions to form potassium iodide.
  • The reaction in which acid reacts with a base to produce salt and water is called a neutralization reaction.
  • For example,  HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O
  •  Here, hydrogen ions combine with oxygen ions to form water, and sodium ions combine with chloride ions to form sodium chloride.
  • In both the above reactions, the two compounds react by exchanging ions to form two new compounds. So they are examples of double displacement reactions.
