Predators cannot

Predation is a nature’s way of transferring to higher trophic levels the energy fixed by plants. Predators act as ‘conduits’ for energy transfer across trophic levels. They keep prey populations under control. Predators also contribute to the stability of the ecosystem. Without predators, prey species could achieve very high population densities and cause ecosystem instability.
