The Pakistani Army, led by General Pervez Musharraf, then-Chief of Army Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, overthrew the civilian government of publicly elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on October 12, 1999, in a bloodless coup. On October 14, 1999, General Musharraf, serving as the country's acting chief executive, proclaimed a state of emergency by issuing a Provisional Constitutional Order suspending Pakistan's Constitution two days after seizing power.
