Detailed Solution

Printing was first introduced in India by Christian missionaries. The first printing press in India was introduced in Goa. Francis Xavier, a Christian missionary, was a key figure in introducing the printing press to India. In the middle of the sixteenth century, Portuguese missionaries brought the printing press to Goa for the first time. Jesuit priests printed a number of tracts and learned Konkani. About 50 books in the Kanara and Konkani languages had been printed by 1674. The first Tamil book was produced in Cochin in 1579 by Catholic priests, while the first Malayalam book was printed there in 1713.
