Formation of the rainbow after the rain is done by reflection, refraction and light dispersion process in water droplets. Light rays enter the raindrop near its top level. Firstly, there is refraction of light when it enters from the rarer (air) medium to the denser (water) medium. Then the dispersion of white light into colours of a different wavelength occurs. Reaching the opposite side of the drop, each colour is refracted back into the raindrop due to the complete internal reflection that hits the drop surface.
