Production under proto-industries helped the poor farmers in the countryside. Poor peasants and artisans in the countryside began searching for merchants. Open fields were becoming increasingly rare during this period, and common lands were being shut down. People who had previously relied on such common grounds for their livelihoods now had to find new sources of income because of this change. In addition, many only had a small plot of land, making it challenging to find the labour for the entire family. So, when merchants came to peasants and offered to pay them to make things for them, they jumped at the chance. They could stay in the country and farm small plots of land because they worked for merchants. As a result, their standard of life arose due to their increased revenue from proto-industrialisation, which supplemented their dwindling income from farming.
