The pars distalis comprises the majority of the anterior pituitary and produces the bulk of pituitary hormones. 

It produces growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). 

The cells of pars intermedia merged with pars distalis secrete melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH).
