The chemical name of plaster of Paris is Calcium sulphate hemihydrate and the chemical formula of plaster of Paris is CaSO4.12 H2O.
It is obtained from dehydrating gypsum (CaSO4.2 H2O). Some of the important properties of plaster of Paris are as follows:
When water is added, gypsum crystals are formed, leading to a solid state.
It shows an exothermic solidification process and can be catalysed by sodium chloride. Plaster of Paris is retarded with stone or borax.
