Detailed Solution

The sun's direct rays fall on the equator on 21st March and 23rd September. When neither of the poles is tilted towards the sun resulting in the equal days and nights experienced by the whole earth, this position is called an Equinox. During this position of the earth, it is autumn season in the Northern Hemisphere and spring season in the Southern Hemisphere on the 23rd of September. It is spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere on 21st March. These changes in the earth's seasons are consequences of the rotation and revolution of the earth.
