Jhumming in Brazil is called Roca.
After producing cereals and other crops on a clear patch of land and moving to another clear and fresh patch of land, when the soil fertility of land decreases, it is termed ‘Slash and Burn Agriculture. This type of shifting in agriculture allows nature to replenish soil fertility through natural processes. Because of no use of fertilisers or other modern inputs, the land productivity in this agriculture is very low. Different names know this agriculture in different regions of the world. For instance, it is known as ‘Jhumming’ in the northeastern states, as Milpa in Mexico and Central America, Conoco in Venezuela, Roca in Brazil, Masole in Central Africa, Ladang in Indonesia and Ray in Vietnam.
