Detailed Solution

Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood in condemnation of the Jallianwala Bagh Tragedy. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre occurred when British soldiers opened fire on a sizable gathering of unarmed Indians in Amritsar, killing several thousand and injuring many more. Thousands of people assembled in Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on April 13, 1919. General Dyer arrived with armed soldiers and gave the command to open fire mercilessly on the uneducated mob. To protest the tragedy, Rabindranath Tagore surrendered his knighthood. After the incident, Tagore sent a letter to the Viceroy of India asking him to renounce the British honorific.
