Raikas combined cultivation with pastoralism.
The Raikas were inhabitants of Rajasthan's deserts. There was little and erratic rainfall in the area. Harvests on cultivated land varied every year. No crop could be cultivated over such a large area. The Raikas merged cultivation and pastoralism as a result. The Raikas of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner remained in their home villages, where pasture was available, throughout the monsoon. They left in search of new pasture and water in October when these grazing areas were dry and worn out then they came back during the following monsoon.
