Raikas resided in the deserts of Rajasthan, where rainfall was scarce. Harvests on these lands fluctuated, and growing crops on vast dry lands were impossible. Thus, the Raikas integrated pastoralism with cultivation. The Raikas of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner remained in their home villages during monsoon season when the pastures provided forage for the herds. However, by October, the ranges had become dry and exhausted. So, they moved out, looking for lands with better fields and water for their animals. By the next monsoon, they returned to their home villages. Maru Raikas were the camel herders in the desert, whereas other Raikas herded goats and sheep.
