Detailed Solution

Velocity of rain falling vertically downward

vr=30  m/s

Question Image

Velocity of woman riding a bicycle

vw=10  m/s  (north  to  south)

To protect herself from rain, the woman should hold her umbrella in the direction of relative velocity of the rain with respect to the woman, i.e.,  vrw

The relative velocity of rain with respect to the woman, i.e., vrw=vrvw

       |vrw|=(30)2+(10)2

=900+100=1000   m/s

=1010  m/s

If vrw makes an angle α with the vertical, then

tanα=vwrr=1030

=13=0.3333

or α=18026'

Hence, woman should hold her umbrella at an angle of 18026' with the vertical towards south.
