Rani Channamma was the ruler of Kitoor. In 1824, she became the first female ruler to revolt against the British East India Company to retain control over her province. Rani Channamma took up guns and headed an anti-British resistance movement when the British attempted to capture the minor state of Kitoor (now in Karnataka). In 1824, she was arrested and died in prison in 1829.
