Rani of Jhansi was defeated by Sir Hugh Rose in 1858. The British army's commander, Sir Hugh Rose, demanded Jhansi's surrender while threatening to obliterate it. Rani Lakshmibai resisted the British's demands for her surrender and continued to protect Jhansi. On March 24, the British bombarded the fort, although they received a lot of fire in response. Tatya Tope, a well-known Maratha commander in the Revolt of 1857, was asked for assistance by Rani Laxmibai. Tatya Tope's army of 20,000 troops arrived at Jhansi but could not compete with the British forces.
