Rani Subaran Kunwar was a prominent leader in the Bhumkal Rebellion of 1910. People in the Bastar region began to gather and discuss the issues they faced under colonial government in their village councils, in bazaars and at festivals or wherever the headmen and priests of several villages assembled. The Dhurwas of the Kanger forest initiated the rebellion, where reservation first took place. In 1910, mango boughs, a lump of earth, chillies and arrows began circulating between villages as messages inviting villagers to rebel against the British. The rebels looted Bazaars, burnt and robbed the houses of officials and traders, schools and police stations, and redistributed grains. Ruling elites like Rani Subaran Kunwar came forward to lead the movement.
