Rashtrakutas established their dynasty in the Deccan region. This dynasty was founded in the Deccan region of the Indian subcontinent in the early mediaeval era. The city of Marked served as their capital. They had engaged in conflict with the Pallava and Chalukya kingdoms over control of the peninsula. They were initially weaker and under the control of the Chalukya kings, but in the seventh century CE, with the aid of the Rashtrakuta chief Dantidurga, who carried out a ritual known as Aranya-garbha, or the golden womb, they proclaimed their independence. The Rashtrakutas underwent this process with the assistance of the Brahmans to become Kshatriyas. Their most potent ruler, Amoghavarsha, tried to conquer Kannauj to increase the size and stability of his kingdom.
