Rashtrakutas were the samantas that belonged to the Deccan. They were initially the subordinates of the Chalukya kings of Karnataka. However, by the mid-8th century, they gained more power. Dantidurga, the Rashtrakuta chief under Chalukyas, overthrew his overlord and took control of the region. It was one of the examples of the cases when samantas gained power and wealth and asserted their independence from their king or overlord.
