Conservative Hindus believed that an educated girl would become a widow, and Muslims worried that reading Urdu romances would corrupt educated women. However, rebellious women occasionally disobeyed such restrictions. Rashsundari Debi was a young married woman living in a very orthodox home in East Bengal around the turn of the nineteenth century who learned to read in the privacy of her kitchen. Later, she penned Amar Jiban, her autobiography. It was the first full-length autobiography to be published in Bengali. Hence, the statement is true.
