This helps create an image with which people can identify the nation. It was in the twentieth century, with the growth of nationalism, that the identity of India came to be visually associated with the image of Bharat Mata. The image was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the 1870s he wrote 'Vande Mataram' as a hymn to the motherland. Later it was included in his novel Ananda math and widely sung during the Swadeshi movement in Bengal. Moved by the Swadeshi movement, Abanindranath Tagore painted his famous image of Bharat Mata. Detailed Solution

The main motive behind launching the Swadeshi Movement was to oppose the division of Bengal into two parts.
The Swadeshi movement was introduced when Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, announced the division of Bengal in July 1905. Indian National Congress introduced the campaign as a protest that led to the boycott motion in the country. It was also intended to impose the movement in India's economic context following the Swadeshi principles. Its main objective was to boycott British products and use only Indian-made products. The main features of the Swadeshi movement were Non-cooperation with the British government, which eventually caused them to collapse, boycotting British goods and using only swadeshi goods and clothing.
