Q.

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

This sense of collective belonging came partly through the experience of united struggles. But there were also a variety of cultural processes through which nationalism captured people's imagination. History and fiction, folklore and songs, popular prints and symbols, all played a part in the making of nationalism. The identity of the nation is most often symbolised in a figure or image. This helps create an image with which people can identify the nation. It was in the twentieth century, with the growth of nationalism, that the identity of India came to be visually associated with the image of Bharat Mata. The image was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the 1870s he wrote 'Vande Mataram' as a hymn to the motherland. Later it was included in his novel Anandmath and widely sung during the Swadeshi movement in Bengal. Moved by the Swadeshi movement, Abanindranath Tagore painted his famous image of Bharat Mata. In this painting Bharat Mata is portrayed as an ascetic figure, she is calm, composed, divine and spiritual. In subsequent years, the image of Bharat Mata acquired many different forms, as it circulated in popular prints, and was painted by different artists. Devotion to this mother figure came to be seen as evidence of one's nationalism.

Detailed Solution

Anandmath, Collection of folklore and folktale and the Image of Bharat Mata played an essential role in igniting feelings of nationalism. History, legends, songs, texts, and symbols all played a significant role in instilling feelings of nationalism in Indians. The nation's identity is often expressed in an image or symbol and the national sentiments that arose among the people when they saw the nation as an idol, the Bharat Mata. This portrait of a man was associated with the 20th century but was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who wrote in the 1870s "Vande Mataram"—a motherland hymn. As the Swadeshi movement spread throughout India, this portrait was painted by Abanindranath Tagore, who portrayed Bharat Mata as a humble, God-fearing, and spiritual man. This devotion was seen as proof of one's nationality. During the Swadeshi movement in Bengal, a tricolour flag (red, blue, and yellow) was designed. It contained eight lotuses representing the eight provinces of British India and a sacred moon representing Hindus and Muslims. In 1921, Gandhiji designed the Swaraj flag with three colours—red, green, and white—and a rotating wheel in the centre representing Gandhian's self-help policy. Carrying the flag in the air during marches or processions was a sign of contempt. Thus, it is clear that symbols play a vital role in uniting people and promoting nationalism.
