The Adam’s apple is actually a partial growth of voice box or larynx in an adolescent boy. Adam's apple is formed due to elongation of the thyroid cartilage which protrudes out in front of the neck .This is caused mainly by some male hormones (regulatory chemicals) during adolescence. As a result of this, muscles (chords) attached to the cartilage get loosened and thickened. When air passes through these loosened and thickened chords a hoarse sound is produced.
