Q.

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.

China's famine of 1958-1961 was the worst recorded famine in world history. Nearly, three crore people died in this famine. During those days, India’s economic condition was not much better than China. Yet, India did not have a famine of the kind China had. Economists think that this was a result of different government policies in the two countries. The existence of democracy in India made the Indian Government respond to food scarcity in a way that the Chinese government did not. They point out that no large-scale famine has ever taken place in an independent and democratic

country.

Detailed Solution

India’s economic condition was not much better than China during the 1950s. Yet, India didn't have such a Famine as China. The Great Chinese Famine took place between 1959 to 1961. It marked the deadliest famine in the history of the People's Republic of China. It is also regarded as one of the greatest man-made disasters in the history of mankind with an estimated death toll of more than 50 million people due to starvation. The experts believe that the existence of democracy saved India from the famine whereas China's lack of democracy, public opinion, and free press are the reasons responsible for the large-scale famines.
