The society of estates was a part of the feudal system that dated back to the Middle Ages. The term Old Regime is usually used to describe the society and institutions of France before 1789. French society was organised in a system of estates. Peasants made up about 90 percent of the population. However, only a small number of them owned the land they cultivated. Detailed Solution
The estate's society was a feature of the feudal society that existed throughout the Middle Ages. The term "Old Regime" refers to the society and institutions of France before 1789. The Ancien Régime was another name for the old regime. With its initiation in 1789, the French Revolution eliminated the feudal system of the French nobles (1790) and hereditary monarchy (1792). During the Ancien Régime, the Valois dynasty governed until 1589, when the Bourbon dynasty took over. The society of estates, a defining feature of the old regime, consisted of three estates. The clergy made up the First Estate, the nobility made up the Second Estate, and the commoners made up the Third Estate.
