Zollverein was a type of Customs union.
On Prussia's insistence, most of the German states joined a customs union, or Zollverein, established in 1834. Previously, there were no standard measures of weights and length in Germany. The emerging commercial classes, who fought to establish a unified economic region allowing the unrestricted movement of products, people, and capital, saw such circumstances as barriers to economic trade and growth. The union eliminated tariff barriers and decreased theirs from being over thirty different currencies to just two. Railway construction boosted mobility and used economic motivations to advance racial unification. A wave of economic nationalism bolstered wider nationalist sentiments that were already present.
